One of the most common mistakes I see sales teams make — and I see it in companies of every size — is trying to sell to everyone. The logic seems sound: the bigger the pool, the more deals you'll close. In practice, the opposite is almost always true.
When you try to sell to everyone, your message is generic. Your outreach is scattershot. Your discovery conversations are shallow because you don't have deep knowledge of your prospect's world. And your close rate suffers accordingly.
The companies I've seen transform their sales results fastest are almost always the ones that got more specific about who they sell to — not less. Narrowing your focus expands your results.
"Specificity is the most underrated competitive advantage in sales. When your prospect feels like you understand their exact world, they stop comparing you to everyone else."
What Is an ICP and Why Does It Matter So Much?
An Ideal Client Profile (ICP) is a detailed description of the type of company — and the type of buyer within that company — that gets the most value from what you sell, closes fastest, pays best, stays longest, and refers others.
Notice what that definition isn't: it's not just "companies that might buy from us." It's the companies where you create the most impact and generate the most revenue. Getting this right changes everything downstream — your prospecting, your messaging, your discovery, your close rate, and your client retention.

How to Know If Your ICP Is Right
Here's a simple test: look at your five best clients. Not the biggest — the best. The ones that got results, stayed loyal, paid on time, and referred others. What do they have in common? That's your ICP trying to tell you something.
Now look at your five most difficult clients. The ones that churned, complained constantly, or took forever to close and never delivered the expected value. What do they have in common? Those are your disqualifiers.
Your ICP lives in the space between those two lists.
Putting Your ICP to Work
Once you have a clear ICP, use it to audit everything:
- Does your outreach speak directly to your ICP's specific pain points?
- Are your discovery questions designed around your ICP's world?
- Is your pipeline full of ICP-fit prospects — or is it full of everyone?
- Are you disqualifying non-ICP prospects early, or holding onto them hoping they'll come around?
An ICP only helps if you actually use it to make decisions. The best teams revisit their ICP quarterly, refine it based on what they're learning, and hold each other accountable to prospecting within it.
Stop selling to everyone. Get specific. The revenue will follow.
